Sew your own sandwich bag

During this workshop, you will learn to make a reusable sandwich bag step by step. Sustainable, beautiful, and practical: the ideal combination!
You will have a choice of various fabrics and can use our school’s sewing machines and all the necessary materials. Laurence will guide you using examples to achieve a good end result. We start with a brief introduction to the sewing machines, after which we will soon be proudly holding our first project in our hands!

Sewing experience is not necessary at all; a little dexterity and a lot of enthusiasm are sufficient for this workshop!

This workshop is offered by CVO GENT.

CVO GENT CHERISHES ARTISANAL HERITAGE

Crafts contribute to the cultural identity and diversity of our society. They reflect the traditions, values, and history of our community. That is why we at CVO GENT consider it important to keep our cultural heritage alive and pass it on to this and future generations.

We offer 6 crafts; Hand weaving, Bookbinding, Lace making, Upholstery, Ornamental metalwork, and Sewing.

SEWING

The sewing course at CVO GENT consists of various modules. You start as a complete beginner, aiming to have already produced 5 finished pieces by the end of the first year. Each subsequent year, more and more difficult techniques are introduced, which together lead to at least 2 finished custom-made pieces per school year. As you progress, you gain more insight into the various sewing techniques, develop your own style, and learn to work more and more on custom-made items. Nothing is more fun than receiving compliments on your self-made outfit!

Start your weaving adventure: Hand weaving on a table loom for beginners

During this workshop, you will be introduced to the Hand Weaver course. After a brief introduction to the various steps of weaving, an introduction to binding theory, and a discussion of different swatches, you will have the opportunity to weave on a table loom with shafts. While you experiment with different materials, we, as experienced teachers, will teach you some finer points of the craft. You will learn, among other things, how to create combinations by using different shafts.

You will have a table loom at your disposal for the entire workshop.

After the workshop, we will cut your fabric, and you will go home with a swatch in which various techniques have been applied. The length of the woven piece depends on the materials used, the bindings applied, and your own weaving pace.

During the course, you will be introduced to an extensive range of bindings and techniques. You will learn everything about the underlying theory, technology, and design, and put this into practice.

You can experiment with the wide range of yarns in various materials and discover which loom, technique, and design are your favorites.

Giant Loom

This installation allows every visitor to contribute to a giant circular loom.

Just roll up your sleeves, smile, and create something substantial connecting with all those who have gone before or are following you.

The entire work will be constructed from residual materials.

Vyshyvanka – Ukrainian embroidery

Vyshyvanka (vyshyvaty embroidery), which literally means something that is embroidered, is an ancient Ukrainian form of traditional embroidery, which was primarily used to decorate clothing, cushions, tablecloths, icons, and the like with symbols and ornaments in classic colors.

During this workshop, you will learn at least 2 to 3 traditional embroidery stitches – zavolikanja/zanyzuvanja (weaving stitch), hlaj (satin stitch), and cross-stitch. Using zavolikanja/satin stitch, we will embroider a bookmark ribbon, or using cross-stitch/satin stitch, a small cushion (Christmas decoration).

Participants will receive an embroidery kit containing the necessary materials, a chart, and a flyer with a brief history of Ukrainian embroidery.

Workshop leader Nadia: “The love for these traditional crafts and interest in Ukrainian culture is a legacy from our parents. Mother embroidered, often traditional blouses on request. She was also a co-founder of the Association of Ukrainian Women in Belgium. Mama organized various exhibitions. Father made small bowls and crosses in painted woodcarving. We uphold the artisanal traditions—embroidering copies or replicas of old blouses, collecting Ukrainian traditional costumes, as well as other traditional crafts—the annual painting of Easter eggs—Pysanky, vybijky-blueprint.

As Ukrainians, we see it as our duty to protect and promote our heritage. At this moment, Russia is not only trying to wipe Ukraine off the map, but through its bombardments of museums and libraries, it is systematically destroying our culture and traditions.”

Embroidery for young children

Take a seat (together with your child) at an embroidery table and embroider without compromise, without prescribed rules or patterns.

Our tables were specially designed for small children to embroider on in a simple way. We find the ‘doing’ and the pleasure in doing it more important than the result.

Screen printing

In this workshop, you will learn what screen printing is. You get to get hands-on and learn to print your own garments. You will have the creative freedom to choose from various unique designs, colors, and positioning. We will work with screen printing frames, carousels, squeegees, and ink.

Screen printing is an artisanal printing technique that can be used to print on textiles, paper, and various media. You will use a screen printing frame (a type of stencil) and a squeegee to print your chosen design and color.

3D wet felting

3D wet felting is a felting technique in which wool fibers are formed into three-dimensional, seamless shapes rather than flat fabrics. Through the use of water, soap, and friction, the fibers become interwoven, creating a material that forms around a mold.

Participants use a combination of Belgian natural wool, colored wool, and other materials such as silk to create their 3D shape. You might get a little wet, but it will be a fun session, and you will go home with a finished 3D object made from local materials.
