Vyshyvanka (vyshyvaty embroidery), which literally means something that is embroidered, is an ancient Ukrainian form of traditional embroidery, which was primarily used to decorate clothing, cushions, tablecloths, icons, and the like with symbols and ornaments in classic colors.
During this workshop, you will learn at least 2 to 3 traditional embroidery stitches – zavolikanja/zanyzuvanja (weaving stitch), hlaj (satin stitch), and cross-stitch. Using zavolikanja/satin stitch, we will embroider a bookmark ribbon, or using cross-stitch/satin stitch, a small cushion (Christmas decoration).
Participants will receive an embroidery kit containing the necessary materials, a chart, and a flyer with a brief history of Ukrainian embroidery.
Workshop leader Nadia: “The love for these traditional crafts and interest in Ukrainian culture is a legacy from our parents. Mother embroidered, often traditional blouses on request. She was also a co-founder of the Association of Ukrainian Women in Belgium. Mama organized various exhibitions. Father made small bowls and crosses in painted woodcarving. We uphold the artisanal traditions—embroidering copies or replicas of old blouses, collecting Ukrainian traditional costumes, as well as other traditional crafts—the annual painting of Easter eggs—Pysanky, vybijky-blueprint.
As Ukrainians, we see it as our duty to protect and promote our heritage. At this moment, Russia is not only trying to wipe Ukraine off the map, but through its bombardments of museums and libraries, it is systematically destroying our culture and traditions.”
This workshop is offered by Erfgoedcel Gent.
